Dr Mukesh Kumar, Director, Steel Research and Technology Mission of India-SRTMI is a graduate in Metallurgical Engineering and Ph.D. from IIT Delhi in Mechanical Engineering. He is having of around four decades of experience in Metallurgy, Oil & Gas, Technology Development, and Project Management in India and abroad.
Has worked for 26 years with Engineers India Limited (EIL), a premier engineering consultancy organization under the Ministry of Natural Gas and Petroleum and was associated with number of green field and brown field projects in the field of Metallurgy and Oil & Gas. Was deputed to Australia as COO of EIL Asia Pacific and headed its operations for more than 3 years based at Perth, Australia. Also represented EIL in Middle East as business head and mainly worked in offshore and onshore oil & gas projects. Was associated with numbers of projects in Aluminium, Copper, Lead, and Zinc and was also involved in developing the indigenous technology for the production of Titanium Sponge.
Worked with Vedanta Group for about 10 years as COO & President of Aluminum & Power business and later as the President & Group Head –Technology & Innovation for entire group. Involved in development of numbers of innovative technologies like Red Mud Powder, Fly ash into Geo-Polymers as a replacement to cement, Vanadium recovery etc. for improving sustainability.
Before taking over charge of the Director-SRTMI, Dr Kumar was working as an advisor to Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL), Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited (MIDHANI) and KPMG India also and was associated with critical projects like Carbon Fiber, High end Aluminium alloys, Tungsten Powder & Carbide and revival plans for HCL.
Presently spearheading research and technology development programs for primary and secondary sector mainly to meet objectives of National Steel Policy 2017 and to make industry globally competitive.
